Frosty jumped like an

inexperienced, young horse.

“Oh, good girl, good girl!” she exclaimed as she leaned over to pet the mare on her neck. “See? That wasn’t so bad. Good girl!”

“Now aren’t you glad I told you to hold onto her mane?” teased Laura.

“How did you know she’d jump like that?”

“I’ve seen so many first-time trail horses jump a tiny little obstacle like it’s a six-foot monster. And they all jump the same, much too high and usually from a standstill too. So I had a pretty good feeling of what Frosty would do. I’d say she’s a pretty typical horse.”

Having her horse called a typical horse was not the sort of thing Heather ever thought she wanted to hear. But today it sounded wonderful. Heather had become increasingly frustrated with Frosty, wondering why she had ever decided to buy a horse from an auction. Of course there was a reason Frosty was at the sale; nobody could ride her in a ring. What good was she? But now Heather understood. Frosty would probably never make it into a show ring but that was okay. She was a wonderful, sweet horse and she was going to make a fantastic trail horse. They would have years of fun together, exploring the woods of New England.

Once Frosty had crossed the brook and been given abundant amounts of praise, the friends continued on their way. The trail meandered through several small meadows, went up and down numerous hills and went through some very deeply forested areas. Within this heavily overgrown area there was one point where the trail rounded a sharp corner. The sun, hidden by the enormous trees, made this spot seem unusually dark.

Just as Frosty came around the corner, she spotted a huge white rock, almost as big as she was, right in front of her. She stopped the instant she saw this terrifying object. With bulging eyes, flared nostrils and raised head, she blew through her nose. It sounded as though she was trying to clear something out of her nose. She did it again and then a third time. The girls just laughed.

“Oh Frosty, it’s not going to eat you!” giggled Heather.

Being urged on by her rider and seeing that Rusty was once again getting ahead of her, Frosty reluctantly went forward. But she refused to go anywhere near the rock monster. She continued to blow her nose at it as she passed, ever so carefully, along the far side of the trail. She was so close to the trees that her side rubbed up against one.

“Hey, move over!” commanded Heather as she forced Frosty to get back onto the trail. Heather had to raise her leg up and toward the center of her saddle to avoid being hurt by the tree. Unfortunately, her saddle wasn’t as lucky and as Frosty continued, it was forced against the tree. There was a dull, rubbing noise as the leather saddle flap scratched against the bark. As soon as they were past the
